A Weekend of Vintage in Annandale, Minnesota

Lately I have been reliving fond memories of blue skies, clouds, trees, and water. As a youngster, I spent many summers at my grandparents’ lake home in rural Minnesota. Sun, fun, and family…what more could a child ask for?

Summers in Minnesota are stunning.

Inspired by times of old, as well as beautiful July weather, I felt a quick overnight trip was in order. Being that the theme of this mini excursion revolved around childhood nostalgia, why not go vintage all the way? Luckily for me, there was a well-established bed and breakfast located in the small town I planned to visit: The Thayer.

Saving my sleep for the inn.

So, my son and I set out on a hot Friday afternoon to the small town of Annandale, Minnesota. Farm fields of green and gold were a lovely sight to see on the hour plus drive there. Upon arrival, we curiously drove by the home I believed to be my late grandparents’ lakeside property. Flooded with family memories, I became a bit teary-eyed yet happily satisfied. A further drive around the lake directed us to its official camp site and sandy beach.

A lovely sight – Cedar Lake.

After soaking in the sun, we headed towards town. With a population of 3,300, I would describe Annandale as a friendly and picturesque place to visit. Nestled between three beautiful lakes, it is a Midwest mermaid’s dream.

The Thayer Bed and Breakfast Inn

Staying at The Thayer was enjoyable as well. Built in 1895 and serving as a railroad hotel, it has hosted many guests over the years including Al Capone. Rooms have retained their historical character, and a courtyard with greenery entertains guests via outdoor dining and live music areas.

A perfectly sized bar for all visitors.
Indoor dining in the parlor.
A pretty courtyard which lights up at dusk.

After settling in to our antique-inspired room and getting a good night of shut-eye, we arose early on Saturday morning and headed to the edge of town. There, in the midst of emerald green farmland, stood the highly anticipated Wright County Swapper’s Meet. With the possibility of an undiscovered vintage find, I was filled with energy and excitement!

Do Tell: Any Good Finds?

Between the heat, sun, and my son’s semi-whining, I still enjoyed our walk around the market. And while the vending areas weren’t completely full, there was a nice variety of sellers. A dabbling of everything to include food, produce, vintage, and handmade were up and running. I found a few things of interest but only ended up purchasing a couple of handmade macaroons and a pint of local handcrafted honey (I love sweets and supporting small businesses!)

All in all, it was a relaxing, short two-day trip. True to form, small towns always impress. Slow living, good hospitality, and friendliness are always memorable. Thank you Annandale!
