The days are slowly growing shorter. Later sunrises; earlier sunsets. Sultry yet dry, late summer weather. These are the days of the Minnesota State Fair…12 days full of sun, food, and fun!
From the 1800s to the Present
Starting in 1859, the Minnesota state fair originally featured agriculture as a means to boost the farming industry. As the years progressed, a variety of different exhibits came to be added. It now sees a large sprinkling of unique exhibitors to include merchandise, technology, government, and education.
This annual event always draws a large crowd of attendees ready to partake in its glory. I think the food and people watching are a large part of the attraction! No matter the why, there is always something in store for everyone.
As for my family, it has been four years since we last passed through the fair’s gates. Our last adventure ended abruptly due to massive crowds with virtually no space to walk without discomfort. I will have to say 2022 was great though!
Our itinerary
My youngest son and I arose early on a weekday morning in anticipation of avoiding the later afternoon crowd. We took advantage of the free park and ride at a nearby church. One could feel the excitement brewing on the bus ride there!
Into the gates we strolled with our pre-paid passes and on to the fair! Although the majority of attractions were unchanged from years passed, it provided a certain comforting nostalgia in this ever-changing world. I’m sure many Minnesotans such as myself have fond memories of coming to the fair as a child.
We did a lot of walking, exploring, people watching, and of course eating. I had a sweets “cheat day” and indulged in the deep fried blueberry pie with cinnamon ice cream and strawberry shortcake, along with a large baked potato and falafel. Emmanuel didn’t stray from the American fanfare of a cheeseburger, fries, and drink, as well as the classic funnel cake with powdered sugar.
My favorite part of the 2022 fair was saying “hi” to the animals in the coliseum areas. For some reason I felt very connected to the mama cows, lol. I have a lot of respect and admiration for our farmers and pray that they enjoyed their time showcasing their best.
After a wee bit over three hours, my son was ready to hit the road. We both had a ball and hope to visit again next year. Word to the wise, come early and bring plenty of money to spare!
