West Coast Dreaming (and Driving)

Road trip. Synonymous with freedom, summertime, and the American spirit. In my case, my eldest son’s fear of flying. What is it like to drive over 4000 miles roundtrip in the span of 14 days? Well, I can sure share.

Let’s go!

The What, Where, and How

Long story short, we drove from Minnesota through Iowa, then to Nebraska, onward further to Colorado, pushing through Utah, and ultimately reaching our destination, Nevada, four days later.

Overlooking the golf course in Henderson, Nevada.

Las Vegas, Nevada, was met with the start of the sizzling desert heat of June. We enjoyed our stay with family in Sun City, a lovely retirement community nestled at the top of a mountainous hill. We had a fun time taking in the strip, dining out, visiting China Town, and of course people-watching galore.

Beauty on the Vegas strip.

Undeterred from the lull of driving, we continued onward to Santa Monica. Soaking up the sun, beach, boardwalk, and its designer doughnuts…wow, just wow. Hanging out in L.A. and Beverly Hills couldn’t be beat. California dreaming is the real deal!

So Soon?

Alas, as so often in life, all good things come to an end, and it was time to head home. The journey back wound its way through a few new states, including Wyoming and South Dakota. Great weather, uneventful road conditions, and good health throughout our trip, not to mention the loving support of family, friends, and hospice caring for my mom while were away…what more could a gal ask for?

Wonderful Wyoming.

My Analysis

In a nutshell, our journey was awesome. So much to see in this beautiful nation of ours! My top picks for ambience and scenery were Frisco (CO), Provo (UT), and Santa Monica (CA).

Hiking in Frisco, Colorado.
Spectacular views abound.
The beaches of California are marvelous.
Days Inn, Santa Monica…very 1980s.
Panoramic scene from a mall in Provo, Utah.

What’s Next?

Long, lengthy road trips anytime soon? Never say never, although I’ll likely pass and fly the friendly skies next time!

Until next time!

Hope you’ve been enjoying your summer too 🙂
